The deployment of 5G networks in Latin America is expected to further propel the fintech industry and enhance financial inclusion. 5G networks are perfect for novel business and industry applications, acting as a catalyst for digital transformation and Industry 4.0. This development will likely improve the mobile industry’s contribution to the regional economy, which currently represents 7% of GDP. With 5G capabilities, innovative fintech applications, such as mobile payments, digital banking, and blockchain-based solutions, can be developed.

Mexico: A Market Leader in Fintech

Mexico, one of the largest fintech markets in the region, boasts over 400 fintech startups[1]. High smartphone penetration, reaching approximately 75% in 2021[2], and low banking penetration, less than 60% of adults have a bank account, makes it an optimal market for mobile payments and digital banking.

Some examples of successful Mexican fintechs are Clip, which offers mobile point-of-sale (mPOS) solutions for micro and small businesses. With a 2021 funding round of $250 million in 2021, Clip has become Mexico’s first fintech unicorn, reaching a valuation of over $2 billion[3]; the company has stated that one of its main challenges accessing rural areas is poor network connectivity which the deployment of 5G networks will help address.

Another is Konfío, a leading Mexican fintech company founded in 2013 that has made significant strides in revolutionizing financial services for SMBs through its AI-integrated online lending platform. Based in Mexico City, Konfío has been recognized globally, ranking among the top 250 fintechs worldwide according to CB Insights. The company is committed to fostering economic growth and inclusivity, notably addressing gender biases in credit applications. Its innovative approach to lending and significant venture capital funding underscore its role as a pivotal player in Mexico’s fintech ecosystem, with a broader mission that extends to supporting the country’s economic and cultural development.

Colombia: Promoting Financial Inclusion

Colombia, with over 200 fintech startups[4], has experienced significant growth in its fintech sector. A large unbanked population, estimated at 46% in 2020[5], makes it a prime market for fintech solutions promoting financial inclusion and digitization.

For instance, Movii provides mobile banking services to this unbanked demographic. With more than 2.5 million users as of 2021[6], Movii offers a comprehensive suite of financial services, including bill payments, peer-to-peer transfers, and e-commerce transactions. Incumbent-developed solutions like Nequi from Bancolombia and Daviplata from Davivienda are also targeting this segment.

Argentina: High Smartphone Penetration Driving Fintech Growth

Argentina’s fintech industry is expanding, with over 200 startups operating in the country[7]. High smartphone penetration, which surpassed 70% in 2021[8], makes it an attractive market for mobile payments and digital banking.

Among the leading fintechs in the country are MercadoPago, a Mercadolibre subsidiary that brings financial services (loans, payments, debit account among others) to a large base of more than 7 million customers both consumers and businesses with a rich digital wallet/super-app; and Ualá, another successful Argentinian fintech startup, offering a personal finance management app. With over 3 million users as of 2021[9], Ualá provides a range of services, including bill payments, savings accounts, investments, and credit cards.

Brazil: The Largest Fintech Market in Latin America

Brazil, the largest fintech market in Latin America, hosts over 1,000 fintech startups[10]. Its significant unbanked population, estimated at 35% in 2020[11], presents opportunities for fintech solutions that foster financial inclusion in a market with an already high digital payments acceptance penetration.

Examples of leading fintechs in the market are Nubank, a successful Brazilian fintech startup, provides digital banking services to over 40 million customers[12]. With a valuation of $30 billion in 2021, Nubank has become the largest fintech company in Latin America and one of the most valuable digital banks globally[13] and Ebanx, an end-to-end payment solution across the entire e-commerce transaction flow without the need of a local entity. Its mission is to bring together major global businesses and the multicultural population of Latin America1.

Another example is EBANX, a leader in alternative payment methods for global companies – including digital wallets, cash & vouchers, instant payments, and account-based transfers – as well as the top performing player in local card processing performance – including installment plans2. EBANX has raised a total of $460M in funding over three rounds.

Finally, PagSeguro a pioneer in bringing mPOS devices and card acceptance to the masses. PagSeguro provides fintech services and solutions for micro-merchants and small and medium businesses in Brazil and internationally (1). In Brazil, PagSeguro has over 7.7 million acquired merchants and over 15 million PagBank customers, a new venture that launched in 2019(2)

Chile: A Growing Fintech Ecosystem

Chile’s fintech industry is growing, with over 100 startups operating in the country[14]. High smartphone penetration, reaching approximately 75% in 2021[15], makes it an ideal market for mobile payments and digital banking.

A leading Chileans fintech ls Fintual, a successful startup that offers an investment management app. In 2021, Fintual raised $15 million in a Series A funding round, with plans to expand its services across Latin America[16].

Conclusion

In conclusion, the deployment of 5G networks in Latin America is poised to further bolster the fintech industry and improve financial inclusion. With 5G capabilities, new fintech applications can be developed, such as mobile payments, digital banking, and blockchain-based solutions. The fintech sector in Latin America, led by countries like Mexico, Colombia, Chile, Argentina, and Brazil, has a promising future. Successful companies like Clip, Konfio, Movii, Mercado Pago, Ualá, Nubank, EBANX, PagSeguro and Fintual are transforming the financial industry and promoting financial inclusion in the region with a positive impact on economic development.
